Tranent and the Prestonpans coast
Tranent sits on a ridge above the coast, just off the A1, about ten miles east of Edinburgh. It's a former mining town, and these days a lot of people commute into the city. For groups, it's well placed for the races, the beaches and the airport.
A bit of history
The Battle of Prestonpans was fought in 1745 on the fields between Tranent and the coast. It was Bonnie Prince Charlie's first big victory, won in about fifteen minutes. There's a viewpoint and memorial cairn near the battlefield, and the Prestonpans tapestry tells the story if you want the full version.
Days out nearby
- Musselburgh Racecourse. Around ten minutes away. We drop off at the gates and collect after the last race.
- Seton Collegiate Church. A medieval church in quiet grounds near Port Seton, looked after by Historic Environment Scotland.
- Longniddry Bents. A long, open stretch of beach and dunes, good for a walk or a picnic.
- Gosford House. A large country house near Longniddry, open on certain days.
Trains and travel
Prestonpans station, between Tranent and the coast, has trains to Waverley. We can collect from there if some of your group are arriving by rail. Edinburgh Airport is about 30 minutes away using the A1 and the bypass.
