Penicuik, the Pentlands and Roslin
Penicuik sits at the foot of the Pentland Hills and has no railway station. If you're getting a group into Edinburgh or to the airport, your choices are a few cars, the bus, or a minibus that collects everyone. Most groups go for the minibus once they've done the maths on parking.
Walking groups
The Pentland Hills Regional Park starts on the edge of town. A lot of walking clubs use us for linear routes: drop off at Flotterstone on the A702, walk over the hills, and get picked up somewhere else entirely. It saves arranging cars at both ends. Around Penicuik
- Penicuik House. The shell of an 18th-century Palladian mansion in a large estate, owned by the Clerk family, with woodland walks open to the public.
- Rosslyn Chapel. About ten minutes away in Roslin, and a popular stop for visitors.
- Hillend. The Midlothian Snowsports Centre has one of the longest dry ski slopes in Europe, and there's a chairlift with views over Edinburgh.
Nights out and airport runs
The city centre is about 30 minutes away via the A701, and Edinburgh Airport around 30 to 35 minutes using the bypass. For early flights, the roads are clear and it's usually quicker.
