North Berwick: seabirds, golf and the beach
North Berwick is a seaside town about 25 miles east of Edinburgh, with two beaches, a harbour and a lot of golf. It's an easy train ride from Waverley, but trains don't suit golf bags, wedding outfits or a group of twelve heading for dinner.
Golf
North Berwick West Links is one of the best-known links courses anywhere, and its 15th hole, the Redan, has been copied by course designers ever since. The Glen course is on the cliffs to the east. Golf groups often play two or three East Lothian courses in a trip, and a minibus with room for clubs is the easiest way to move between them.
The Bass Rock and the Seabird Centre
The Scottish Seabird Centre by the harbour runs boat trips out to the Bass Rock, home to the world's largest colony of northern gannets. From spring to autumn the rock looks white from the shore because of the birds. Book the boat in advance on summer weekends.

Tantallon Castle sits on the cliffs about three miles east, with the Bass Rock just offshore. North Berwick Law, the cone-shaped hill behind the town, is a short climb with a great view. In August the town hosts the Fringe by the Sea festival.
